DESIGN
I’ve done hundreds of logos in my 16 years of being a designer. Here’s a small sample of some of them ranging from simple typography to illustrations. I’ve created alot of typefaces from A-Z and usually create something new even when I use more common fonts. I really enjoy making logos and icons and will never grow tired of it no matter how many I’ve done.
Eligh and his mother Jo Wilkinson made a new genre bending album of Folk Hop and asked me to create the album package for them. Despite my retiring from doing CD packages I agreed to do this one since it was such a cool project and I can’t deny the family. We took inspiration from Eligh’s persona as the black crow and also mixed in the idea of an ancient book of poetry.
This is the line that I made for my good friend DJ Child and his crew of singers and producers. Inspired by roots reggae and the movement from Jamaica to Brooklyn of conscious lifestyle and revolutionary thinking. I’ve had the pleasure to see our line worn be some of my favorite singers such as Richie Spice, Sizzla, Jah Dan, and many more.
I did these designs at the end of summer 2007 for the grand opening of my brother Med’s store on 650 Fordham Road in the Bronx NYC. I’ve been down with TCS for 8 years, that’s my NY family. Med, Ces, Yes2, and me create the line with graffiti and tattoo inspired art. Best place in NY to get a tattoo, airbrush work, buy spraypaint, graffiti canvasses, and gear. They keep expanding the facility and it’s a Bronx landmark for any true hip hop head the world over.
My good friend at Digital Gypsy Josh Bell had shot this live concert of Atmosphere, Blueprint, and POS in the town they grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He commissioned me to make a hand drawn cover and DVD menu interface for the project fusing the styles of hip hop, punk rock, and a rural element. It made for a unique looking cover and package. The DVD menu was one of the most intricate motion menus I have ever made. Politics prevented this from ever hitting the shelves.
Longtime friend and client The Grouch hit me up to create this package for the Living Legends with a great idea for the art direction. Together we put together one of the best packages the band had ever made. I had fun creating the old look and also got to see the artwork manifest on a giant tour bus and a pair of custom Living Legends Reebok shoes. This was the last CD package I made for them and was a big fold out style with a panel for each member.
Grouch hired me to create this package and we wanted to do something sexy with the album name “Allover”. We came up with covering his wife in Hershey’s chocolate sauce. It proved to be very effective marketing and we also used a metallic gold that made this a classy package design. I also made the logo as is the case with all of the legends stuff I’ve done. We also made a 12″ for the song Windows.
I got to do the solo album for my homie Sunspot from Living Legends. My friend OG Block took the photos on hot summer day in Santa Monica at the pier. We did the CD package and a 12″ for Battle Axe Records. I also did some logos and illustrations for him on this one.
Superproducer The Alchemist got me to do his logo and a promotional CD and 12″. We worked as we both lived back and forth between LA and NY. I made a bunch of other logos for his album 1st Infantry. Working with producers is always cool cause we both are used to just sitting behind computers all night and getting it done.
My friend Nicky Diamonds and Greg Carroll started a skateboard wheel company to go along with Diamond. I came in from the inception and helped to Art Direct the overall aesthetic of the brand. We went with a funky 70’s pimpstyle type of vibe to pay homage to the area of SF known as the Fillmore. I made about 5 seasons of wheel graphics, probably about 30 wheel graphics in total. I started working on skateboard graphics in 1993, so doing these 10 years later was fun.
